Genius Loci ’25 – Faust: Light and Shadow

After three successful days and nights, our façade projection festival GENIUS LOCI WEIMAR came to a close at midnight on Sunday, September 7, 2025. This year’s theme, Faust – Light and Shadow, was staged around the City Palace. Four video-mapping projections lit up the façade of Weimar’s City Palace, accompanied by the Genius Loci Lab with live music and live visuals, two theater performances, a holographic water projection on the River Ilm, and the interactive installation We are Mapping, in which the audience was actively involved in the artistic process.

During the festival, the video-mapping work MANUFACTURA by the Cologne artist duo Studio Zweisiedlerkrebs was awarded €5,000 by the jury. The piece takes up the Gretchen tragedy from Faust and makes the systemic imbalance of patriarchal societies visible. With hand-drawn animations, cinematic dramaturgy, and a treatment of the drama’s complex themes that was both sensitive and powerful, it impressed both the audience and the jury.

Alongside the artists, we would like to take this opportunity to thank all sponsors, the various municipal institutions of the City of Weimar, and everyone involved in the festival.
