Lanterns of Freedom

Design a symbol that will illuminate Weimar.

As part of the Genius Loci Weimar Festival 2026, we are transforming Schillerstraße in Weimar into a temporary public art space. The street lamps will be covered with individually designed foils, illuminated from within by the light of the lamps.

For this project, we are looking for creative voices to be selected through our Open Call.

Everyone is welcome – artists, designers, illustrators, students, hobby artists, and anyone who would like to develop their own visual idea for public space.

Democracy & Society

This year’s Genius Loci Weimar Festival is dedicated to the theme “Democracy & Society.” We are looking for graphic motifs and visual symbols that explore themes such as freedom, solidarity, diversity, human rights, responsibility, participation, and coexistence.

Each lantern becomes an individual voice. Together, the 50 lanterns create a luminous narrative about democracy, community, and our shared future.

We invite you to create a motif that will shine during the festival nights and become part of this collective light installation. Let new symbols of democracy emerge – symbols that celebrate openness, dialogue, empathy, and the strength of community.

Light becomes a language. A lantern becomes a symbol. Weimar becomes a space for a shared voice.
