AI in media art

AI in media art

The international festival for video mapping and media architecture Genius Loci Weimar hosted a one-day symposium on August 10, 2019, where experts spoke on the topics of media art and artificial intelligence and entered into discussion with the audience.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a new player entering the stage of media art. Creativity has long been considered immune to falling under the domination of machines. However, through machine learning, intelligent systems are also conquering creative fields such as music production or projection mapping. Deep learning, neural networks, and machine vision are increasingly being used in media arts as creative tools to produce novel visual worlds.
AI systems that independently design complex musical or graphic compositions are also already on the market. What is behind AI systems used in media art and what possibilities do they offer the artist today and in the future? Are we entering a new age of democratization of the arts, in which AI will separate art from craft? Will artistic intelligence bring down the last bulwark that distinguishes us as humans from the machine and will the computer actually become creative?
