CALL FOR WALK ACTS 2020

Searching for ideas for walk acts and performances

We are looking for ideas and concepts for the realization of walk acts, installations or performances during our festival from 27-29 November 2020.

Genius Loci Weimar provides a platform for your projects in the fields of multimedia, performance, light art or similar with the walk acts along the festival route.

In an evening walk, festival guests can visit all festival stations from 6 pm till midnight. The stations link this year‘s main locations Marstall, Goethe- and Schiller-Archiv and Altenburg and the entire festival route, which this year is being walked in a guided direction.

YOUR IDEAS FOR THE FESTIVAL ROUTE 2020

Your project can be set at the following locations: 01 Kegelplatz, 02 Parking bay Gerberstraße, 03 Grassland on the riverside Ilm, 04 Passage along the Ilm, 05 Mirror sculpture, 06 Kegelbrücke, 07 Über dem Kegeltor, 08 Grassland Jenaer Straße. For more information about the locations see below and on this map.

Conditions for your submission:

  • The project must be weather-resistant. In November the vegetation of the locations could possibly differ from the pictures.

  • The project must be available during the whole weekend from 27 to 29 November 2020, daily between 6pm and midnight. Since the festival takes place in the evening and at night, the submitted project should have sufficient light. Depending on the location, the walk act can also be presented with sound.

  • During the day, the installation may have to be dismantled or secured (road traffic and public access).

  • The project must work with many people in the streets, it must be possible for the spectators to keep this year's distance rules.

  • We offer a budget for project realization; accommodation can be paid for.

Application

Send us your concept and required budget until 30 September 2020 to: info[at]genius-loci-weimar.org

LOCATIONS WALK ACTS 2020

01 | Kegelplatz | Performance

Link to the map of Weimar

Routing:

Right after the first main projection at the Marstall, on the left side of the festival route there is the Kegelplatz, which is enclosed on two sides by house facades.

Relevant:

The meadow can be accessed from several sides and it is possible to linger. Centrally visible is the Albert Schweitzer sculpture by the artist Gerhard Geyers, which was built in 1968. It indicates the Albert Schweitzer memorial house, which is located in one of the neighbouring buildings. Although Schweitzer had no direct relationship with the city, as a German-speaking humanist he is associated with the "Weimar Classics". The performance should be 5 minutes long and can be in relation to the artist but doesn’t has to be.

Restricting:

The direct neighborhood to residential buildings should be taken into account (noise protection!).

Proportion/Size:

The usable surface of the lawn measures about 16 x 20 meters.

02 | Parking bay | Art Point

Link to the map of Weimar

Routing:

On the left side of Gerberstraße there is an inconspicuous backyard parking lot, which will become an exciting off-location during our festival. Visitors are passing this parking bay as they walk down the festival route.

Relevant:

The parking bay is surrounded and bordered by the back walls of houses. A projection onto the house facades would also be imaginable.

Restricting:

The gravel-covered ground is slightly sloping and limited towards the road by a couple of gravel blocks. It is only possible to linger for a short time, viewing the project should be possible while passing.

Proportion/Size:

The usable area of the parking bay measures about 8 x 15 meters.

03 | Grassland on the riverside Ilm | Performance

Link to map of Weimar

Routing:

The grassland on the Riverside Ilm is placed in a dead end street, on the right hand side of the Gerberstraße, parallel to the river Ilm.

Relevant:

The grassland is shaped as a rectangle, it is elongated towards a garage stone wall and is separated from the dead end street by knee-high wooden pillars. From the grassland the Goethe- und Schiller- archive (main installation) on the other side of the river on a hill, is perfect in view.

The visitors are coming from the Gerberstraße and leaving through a small path parallel to the river back to the Kegelbrücke. The duration of the performance should be 5 minutes.

Proportion/Size:

The grassland is about 18 meters wide and 45 meters long.

04 | Passage along the Ilm | Art Point

Link to map of Weimar

Routing:

This relatively narrow, paved passage leads the visitor along the festival route.

Relevant:

The passage offers a good view of the facade of the Goethe- und Schiller-archive on the other side of the river with it’s facade projection. The path leads past the Ilm, only delimited by a railing. An installation that interacts with the surface of the water would be particularly suitable.

Restricting:

Because the path is quite narrow, the visitor groups will have to pass it straight away.

05 | Mirror sculpture | Art Point

Link to map of Weimar

Routing: At the beginning of the Gerberstraße there is a small lawn that faces the banks of the Ilm.

Relevant: A cuboid mirror sculpture is prominently located on this lawn. It is reflecting lights and surrounding buildings in it, but also the viewer themselves are reflected by the mirror walls of this sculpture. The object was created for the Kulturstadtjahr 1999 and hides transformers. The Goethe- und Schiller-archive with a large projection is clearly visible on a hill in the background.

Restricting:

Due to the direct proximity to a residential building, noise protection must be guaranteed here. It is not possible for the visitor to linger at this art point.

Proportion/Size:

The lawn is a polygon which is 15 meters long on its longest side and up to 10.5 meters broad. The sculpture itself has a size of 2.3 x 3.5 meters and a height of 2.8 meters.

06 | Kegelbrücke | Art Point

Link to the map of Weimar

Routing:

The bridge rises with a slight incline in an easterly direction and allows festival visitors to cross the Ilm.

Relevant:

The two-lane road is bordered on both sides of the river by a railing. The visitor has a clear view of the Ilm and the surrounding trees that are no longer green in autumn. To the south, the Sternbrücke with its flood holes can be seen about 200 meters away. There is a weir between both bridges. An installation that plays and interacts with the surface of the Ilm water would be particularly suitable here.

Restricting:

At daytime the installation may has to be dismantled or secured (road and public traffic).

Proportion/Size:

The bridge is around 65 meters long.

08 | Grassland Jenaer Straße | Performance

Link to the map of Weimar

Routing:

The grassland on the Jenaer Straße is opposite the backside of the Goethe- und Schiller-archive and beside the Altenburg, between two of the main installations. The entrance to the higher lying grassland is on the Jenaer Straße.

Relevant:

Trees surround the middle grass-area of the estate. The ground is uneven and planed with grass and small bushes. The ground from the trees parallel to the Jenaer Straße is steep. The visitors will arrive and exit through the same gateway. The duration of the performance should be 5 minutes.

Restrictions:

The installation at the Altenburg should not be visual or acoustically disturbed by the performance on the grassland.

Proportion/Size:

The usable area in the middle is shaped as a triangle with the approximate measurements of 24x26x27 meters.
