Call for Projects

Till Sunday 07 April 2019, all interested artists are invited to submit their concept ideas for the Deutsches Nationaltheater and the Mon Ami. One submission will be commissioned for each building. A budget of 15,000 euros will be made available for the artistic realisation of the work. The winning concepts will be presented in the context of an evening tour through Weimar during the festival from 09 to 11 August 2019.

Historical awareness, an understanding of architecture, high abstractive and imaginative power, narrative flair and a clear vision of the local situation are all vital aspects of a strong concept. A new element of the call for proposals is a presentation of the development of the material in a ten-minute video production.

Content criteria:

An innovative composition in the form of an audio-visual video mapping, with particular observance paid to the Genius Loci. An individual, original and sophisticated handling of the spirit of the location with respect to history and architecture, as well as to the people who were active there and who have influenced the surroundings, and to historical events that have left visible or invisible traces. An engaging dramaturgical and narrative concept for a ten-minute video performance.

Creative criteria:

The expression of individual visual and dramaturgical styles in the development of the concept. The conscious omission of erratic gimmickry and showmanship, intrusive clichés and careless historical retelling. An engaging and skilfully narrated narrative as well as a supportive, gripping dramaturgy for the final audiovisual videomapping.

Call for a Fiction

For the second time, the 2019 edition of Genius Loci Weimar will feature a contemporary building as one of its canvases, namely the new Bauhaus-Museum. Thereby, the original competition for facade projections is expanding to include the roles and remits of media architecture – an increasingly common feature of the modern cityscape – at the level of urban planning.

During the festival weekend, a simulation of a permanent media architecture installation will be realised using the tools and techniques of videomapping. Conceived as form of draft design, the projection is intended to give an indication of how facades could be utilised in the future. It will also bring visibility to the question of whether the technique of front projection can be an aid to visualisation and thus to the process of design itself.

As regards content, the applicants are free to take their own direction. While submissions to the Genius Loci Weimar competition have previously been called upon to evoke the ‘spirit’ of the respective location, for the new Bauhaus-Museum, we are seeking the development of a fictive history or utilisation. In a conscious attempt to offset the event-like nature of a projection festival, the work should evoke the outward appearance of a permanent building installation. As such, this conceptual formulation reflects the contradictions that are often faced by media architecture: where is the exact balance between distraction and enhanced value; when does performance cross over into nuisance?

We are looking for new strategies do not unnecessarily distract passers-by, but which offer something to those that are willing to observe more consciously. Perhaps this could take the form of a reactive facade that responds selectively to the attention that is afforded, or maybe what is needed is an active change of perspective on the side of the viewer; perhaps the work includes temporally shifting dynamics, or a deeper narrative level emerges only on closer inspection, not unlike a painting by Qui Shihua.

Weimar offers an abundance of buildings and spaces that have played an important role in culture and history – also outside of the city limits. The architectural testimony of centuries past encompasses classical, modern and avant-garde, as well as the dark years of National Socialism.

Well-known figures such as Lucas Cranach, Johann Sebastian Bach, Johann Gottfried Herder, Christoph Martin Wieland, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Friedrich Schiller, Franz Liszt, Friedrich Nietzsche, Henry van de Velde and Walter Gropius have all been active in the city, and have left their marks.

Every year, new buildings and structures in and around Weimar are chosen to become a part of the competition and festival. It is the aim of Genius Loci Weimar to draw attention to the spirit of the location with respect to the history, architecture and other visible and invisible layers of meaning, and to bring these to life using the innovative techniques of the media art of video mapping.

One artist or artist team is chosen as the winner for each location. Thereby, the requirements are not always easy, but each winner can look forward to 15,000 euros prize money, kudos and a fantastic show!
